A Notice About Terrain Choice from Big White Ski Patrol

Posted On: December 30, 2021 |
Recently Big White Patrol has noticed an increase in high risk decisions from our guests in regards to terrain choices at the end of the operational day.

These decisions not only apply to out of the resort boundary but also within our operational terrain. Our ski patrol team is becoming more concerned with the decision-making factors of skiers and snowboarders as ski patrol prepares to close the mountain each day. Here are some recommendations that will help our guests make wiser decisions throughout the late afternoon.

  • First of all, please make sure you know the Alpine Responsibility Code.
  • Consider the terrain you continue to recreate in at approximately 2:30 pm. This time of day is starting to get late. Choosing to ski/ride in advanced treed areas may lead to complicated, prolonged rescues.
  • Consider stepping down, or easing back your terrain choices at this time of day. Your last run of the day should not be the most serious, or advanced run, of the day. This decision is not wise and it may lead to prolonged complicated rescues should you require assistance.
  • If your decision is to recreate outside of our resort boundary, remember you are doing so at your own choice. You are responsible for yourself. There is no risk management, avalanche forecasting, and there is no immediate rescue should you require it.
