Local Snowboarder Completes “First Chair Hat Trick”

Posted On: November 26, 2021 |
Snagging first chair of the season can be pretty exciting… but you’ll have to be just as, or possibly, more committed to the cause than local snowboarder Donavon Cantu.

Cantu camped out at the base of the Bullet Chair on Thursday evening (the night before Opening Day 2021/22), starting at 4:30 in the afternoon!

“First chair, gotta have it,” he told the Big White team. “Three years in a row. This is my hat trick.”

We posted about Donavon that first year he snagged first chair, back in 2019. That season, he simply woke up at 3am and drove from Kelowna to make sure he was first in line.

Cantu has been carving up snow at Big White for four seasons now, and has ridden 175 days in that time. Or, make it 176 now that he has Opening Day 2021/22 under his belt!

Cantu wasn’t alone camping out in the cold, however. His buddy Brendan Roberts joined him for this chilly endeavour, and told Big White he “thought it’d be a fun experience” – but that he didn’t know if he would do it again. Roberts has been visiting Big White since he was just three years old.

Congrats on getting another Opening Day banner! Hope to see you again bright and early next season!
