Peter Schumann Awarded the CWSAA Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award Posthumously

Posted On: April 30, 2025 |
Big White Ski Resort and the broader ski community proudly recognise the late Peter Schumann as the recipient of the prestigious Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award, an honour granted by the Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA).

This award is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service in the ski industry, typically in senior management, ownership, or consultancy roles.

Peter Schumann

Peter Schumann, who passed away in August 2022, devoted his life to the ski industry—beginning at Mount Hotham in his native Australia and later at Big White Ski Resort in British Columbia. His career was defined by a relentless drive to build world-class mountain experiences, a deep respect for his team, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

“What an amazing honour to see this Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed upon Peter Schumann,” said Peter Plimmer, CEO and President of Big White Ski Resort.
“Peter dedicated his entire life to the ski industry—from the early days at Mt Hotham in Australia, to joining Big White in the 1990s after his father, Des Schumann, purchased the resort. After moving with his family to Canada in 1996, Peter led many of the major developments and upgrades that have driven Big White’s growth and success. And he did it while being a champion and friend to the people who worked for him.”
“In all honesty, I think he would be embarrassed to receive this award in person, but that’s a reflection of his humble nature,” said Plimmer. “Peter not only oversaw some of the resort’s greatest achievements—he built the foundation for Big White’s continued success.”
“Thank you to the Canada West Ski Areas Association. This recognition means a great deal to me, my cousins, and our entire family. It’s an incredible way to honour Peter’s lifetime of dedication to the industry.”

A Legacy Built on Vision, Hard Work, and Humility

Peter Schumann’s career in ski resort management began with his father, Des Schumann, at Mount Hotham in Australia during the early 1970s. There, the Schumann family transformed the resort into a premier ski destination against considerable odds. In 1985, Des fulfilled a dream by purchasing Big White Ski Resort in British Columbia for $4.5 million, determined to turn it into a world-class destination.

Peter’s leadership became central to Big White’s transformation, particularly after relocating permanently from Australia in 1996. He oversaw key developments such as the Village Centre Mall, Kids' Centre, the installation of Gem Lake lift, upgrading lift infrastructure and extensive real estate growth, with over $100 million in new accommodations during peak off-seasons. His commitment to operational excellence was rooted in his father's philosophy: "There is no neutral. You are either going forward or you're in reverse."

Peter also emphasized employee care and development, ensuring that the workforce remained one of Big White's strongest assets. He often noted that the resort's success was due to the "remarkable people" who worked alongside him.

Honouring a Lifetime of Dedication

Peter Schumann's influence will continue through the family legacy, which is now led by his nephew, Peter Plimmer. Following Peter's retirement as company director in 2013, Peter succeeded him as CEO and president.

In the Big White documentary Keep Moving Forward, Peter reflected on his journey by saying: "I'll never forget what my father did; he did it all."

Peter viewed Big White not just as a business but as a community-owned gem, famously stating that the resort’s season pass holders were its true shareholders.

The Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award fittingly honours Peter Schumann’s unwavering dedication, industry contributions, and the positive culture he nurtured at Big White and within the ski community. His leadership and spirit will continue to shape the future of Big White for generations to come.
