On December 8, 60 years ago, 400 skiers traversed the one-way road up the mountain to the newly constructed resort – complete with a 1,700-metre T-bar and 150-metre tow rope. They paid around $4 for a ticket, ate a “light meal” from the cafeteria in the log-cabin style chalet – located about 150 metres straight uphill from where Monashee Inn is now – and likely had no idea what a ski helmet was.

Ballingall and the Loose Moose were on hand Thursday, July 1, for the grand opening of the new course, which is located between the main Village and Happy Valley.

Introducing Bike Big White’s Beginner Skills Park! Thanks to a $200,000 grant provided by the province and the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), Bike Big White is adding a few new features and upgrades to the park this summer, including a new progression area, located at the south end of the Happy Valley Adventure Park. The skills park will offer a safe and stress-free environment for entry level mountain bikers to test the waters and gain confidence before entering the main park.

Big White Ski Resort wants to thank all of our Kelowna-area and on-mountain friends and team members for joining us this past Saturday, June 12, for our annual Community Clean-Up. Over 165 people flowed through the resort to help tidy up the litter left behind after the snow melted.

Big White Ski Resort is pleased to donate $15,000 to the Central Okanagan Food Bank (COFB), matching the over $15,000 donated by skiers, snowboarders and Central Okanagan locals. Throughout the month of March, and in conjunction with the TELUS Snowcross Challenge, Big White coordinated a matching donation campaign, which ended up raising $38,650 for the COFB.

Time to put the skis and boards back in storage and bring out the bikes and paddleboards! There are many reasons why we love calling the Central Okanagan home, and the diversity of outdoor activities is just one of them – the beautiful backdrops, no matter the time of year, is another! Those jaw-dropping views have made their way into movie productions, commercials, and more – and last year, Bike Big White made its debut in a reality show competition for aspiring mountain bike professionals! Pinkbike Academy showcased our local mountain on the world stage through the streaming network Amazon Prime, and this year, it's coming back for more action!

Big White Ski Resort Ltd has made the difficult decision to close for the season on Monday, April 5 at 4pm, six days earlier than the scheduled date of April 11, to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and the recent surge in P.1 variant cases in British Columbia.

Firstly, I wanted to say that this policy may be subject to change due to recommendations and best practices within the industry and as mandated by local, provincial and federal government bodies.

Mr. Peter Schumann (photo), on behalf of Big White Ski Resort Ltd, made a presentation today of $5,000 to the Big White Mountain Early Learning Centre to assist the non-profit organization in purchasing supplies, materials and to support the early child educator’s salary.

When you think of Slopestyle Mountain Biking, you probably imagine pro athletes hucking huge tricks off of massive jumps. But at Bike Big White’s Slopestyle Centre, the only slopestyle centre in Canada open to the public, you’ll see aspiring boys and girls as young as seven years old attempting the same tricks as the pros riding alongside them.

July 11th – After a night of heavy rain the weather held out for the opening day of Freeride Days at Big White Ski Resort.

Stranded on ice, cold, hungry and unable to swim, a Big White sled dog narrowly escaped death thanks to a hiker and the Big White Fire Department. On Monday afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., a hiker spotted the dog – which had been missing from Candle Creek Kennels for five days – out on the ice at Lake Paul, next to the Powder Chair.

While the winter season melts away, Big White staff are busy preparing for a summer packed with fun and sun – and are now on the hunt for vendors to fill the booths at four summer events.

The Barrels & Berms Snowboardcross World Cup at Big White Ski Resort will make its inaugural debut in the beautiful Okanagan region January 20 - 27, 2020. This will be the first Snowboardcross World Cup in Canada since 2013.

Big White Ski Resort’s Executive Chef Rob Walker has been named one of six Okanagan-area chefs to compete in next fall’s “Canada’s Great Kitchen Party” culinary competition – for the second time in three years. Formerly called the Gold Medal Plates, Chef Walker competed in the 2016 semi-finals in Victoria, where he was up against nine other BC-based chefs to secure a spot in the finals.

Through bluebird skies and powder days, just like that, another fantastic season of skiing and riding has come to an end. All of us at Big White Ski Resort want to send out a huge thank you to those of you who chose to ski and board, drink and eat, stay and play at Canada’s Favourite Family Resort over the past five months. As we prepare for a sun-soaked summer full of hiking and biking, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on the 2018/2019 season. 

When you visit Big White Ski Resort, you’ll interact with a lot of the resort’s employees – from ticket officers to Ski & Board School instructors to restaurant servers and more. Each one has a name tag that includes their hometown and country – and this year, you can find 27 different countries on those name tags.

We know it can be overwhelming tackling a new language when you’re travelling. Luckily for the English speakers that visit Big White Ski Resort, this isn’t much of a hurdle – but, like everywhere else, Canadians have a unique way of speaking that, at times, can cause quite the kerfuffle (problem). So, for all you keeners (brown-nosers) out there looking to make your transition from tourist to full-blown Canuck (Canadian) more seamless, we’ve translated a list of Canadianisms for you to use on your next visit to Big White.

For you, the mountains surrounding Big White Ski Resort may seem worlds away from the beaches that line the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. But, we like to think there are more similarities than differences, and we’ve come up with five reasons why you should think this, too. (But, as similar as we think mountains and beaches are, we wouldn’t recommend taking up valuable luggage space with flip flops and beach balls!)

With direct flights from Australia to Vancouver, and now, a new direct Air Canada flight to Vancouver from Auckland, getting to Big White Ski Resort from across the Pacific has never been easier. The flight between Vancouver and the Kelowna International Airport is just under an hour, with multiple flights arriving and departing throughout the day – meaning you won’t have to spend much time waiting around in the Vancouver airport before grabbing your connecting flight.

At Big White Ski Resort, we love Mother Nature. She’s responsible for our blanket of Okanagan Champagne Powder in the winter and for the fields of wildflowers in the summer – and, of course, the spectacular views of the Monashee and Selkirk Mountain ranges.

On Sunday, March 17, Big White Ski Resort Ltd. honoured the life and legacy of Canadian ski legend Jimmie Spencer with a special bridge dedication ceremony. The skier bridge over Hummingbird run was named the “Jimmie Spencer Memorial Bridge,” with a plaque commemorating the man who developed the Canada West Way.

Now into our second week of 2019, the team at Big White Ski Resort has had time to reflect on our record-breaking end to 2018 , and dream about how we can possibly top it in the new year.

Now that the whirlwind of Christmas and New Year’s has swept over us, we’ve had a chance to reflect on what was important to our guests over the past year – according to Instagram, anyway! First and foremost, with little competition at all, is SNOW. Surprise, surprise! All of you cared A LOT about snow in 2018: snow in July, snow ghosts, snowy gondolas, snow, snow, snow! You also liked drone shots, fireworks and Australian men snowboarding in shorts, but our number one photo of the entire year, weighing in at 4,222 likes as of January 3, 2019, was a photo of our old Powder Triple Chair, replaced in December with the new Powder 2.0 Quad Chair! Throughout the winter season, Big White is teaming with visitors from around the world. With guests flying in from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, Mexico and so many other far-off locations, we know that adjusting from a long-haul flight can be a drag.

To make your stay at Big White as comfortable and “Canadian” as possible, it’s important to know the ins and outs of tipping etiquette here in the Great White North. (And no, we don’t mean the “don’t eat yellow snow” kind of tips).

We're a week out from the biggest event of the summer at Big White Ski Resort, and the course for the Big White Invitational Slopestyle is nearly finished. It’s time for us to say farewell to winter, although it seems winter is not quite ready to say goodbye itself. With a snow base currently sitting well over three metres and cumulative snowfall edging closer and closer to the 10 metre mark, the 2017-2018 winter season will not be soon forgotten. Seven busses from Big White Ski Resort carrying 378 fans from all over the world helped cheer the Kelowna Rockets to a 4-3 overtime victory against the Lethbridge Hurricanes yesterday evening. Cal Foote scored the overtime winner for the Rockets assisted by fellow Team Canada World Junior teammate, Dillon Dube, who also had a goal of his own on the night.

This holiday season, Big White Ski Resort was proud to donate and decorate a tree for the Kelowna’s Festival of Trees, hosted at Mission Hill Family Estate Winery - an event that raised more than $30,000 for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Summer officially kicks off at Big White Ski Resort this Friday, with the resort holding a Canada Day birthday party to kick off the season.

The first weekend of hiking was a success. The wild flowers are out and looking stunning. The vibrancy and variety of colours is truly beautiful. Hiking is available 7 days a week. We will be patrolling the trails from 9 am to 4 pm daily. Patrol is available until 5:30pm daily. The other little tid-bit, hiking is FREE!!!!
