Big White to host first annual L’Alpe de Grand Blanc road bike race
The L’Alpe de Grand Blanc is a 58.4 kilometre road bike race from Kelowna to Big White Ski Resort, taking place on Saturday July 25. There are three distances to choose from: the full-length race of close to 60km, a shorter 23km race and a 2km hill climb for youth under 17.
All distances end at the same finish line, where riders will be greeted with entertainment, a post-ride BBQ and massages. Riders will also be offered transport back to Kelowna after the awards ceremony.
“We planned this event to engage the local cycling community in Kelowna and showcasethe alpine environment at the finish line in the village at Big White,” said Trevor Hanna, VP of Hospitality. “Our event date is also the ‘Queen Stage’, generally considered to be the hardest day of the Tour de France, so we have tried to embody the ceremony and rituals of the world’s greatest cycling event.”
In true Tour de France tradition, the L’Alpe de Grande Blanc will offer up Polka Dot Jerseys for the King and Queen of the Mountain classifications, along with prizes for the fastest team, youngest and oldest competitor.
Early Bird registration for the full-length race is available for single riders until July 15 for $65. After July 15, the price goes up to $85. Alternatively, teams of three can register for the full-length race for $150.
The 23km ride entry is $30 to enter and youth entry for the 2km hill climb is free. Riders without valid Cycling BC licenses are also required to purchase one-day race licenses.
