What a night for a rail jam! March 31st we played host to our 4th and final night rail jam in TELUS Park. Mother Nature was up to her usual tricks, and dumped snow on us all night. It was very tough for the judges to make their decisions with such a unique set-up, and a huge variety of tricks being thrown down by everyone. In the end, there can be only one…first place finish.

15th Annual Neil Edgeworth Banked Slalom
What a great weekend we just had! The 15th annual Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom just wrapped up on Sunday evening. This event is so much more than a contest; it is a gathering of old friends, former and current Olympians, National team riders, coaches, all riders young and old, coming together to celebrate the spirit of snowboarding.
Big White proudly hosted a record field of 262 riders, the biggest we’ve had in 15 years! Among those riders we had our youngest competitors, three of them at nine years old. Big props to Krista Shepard, Rhegan Ryos-Michel, and Sam Fisher for showing everyone what nine year olds can do! This is not an event for only the young, but also the young at heart. Our oldest competitor was Big White “super-local” Scott Richards. Scott has been teaching snowboarding here longer than anyone else. Our oldest Female competitor was of course Willie Findlater. Willie and her Husband Doug enter every year; unfortunately Doug suffered a broken leg just a week prior to the event and was unable to compete. Doug is also the mayor of West Kelowna. Their son Dave competed as well, keeping it a very family oriented event. The Findlater’s are one of many family’s that compete together, they are joined by the Cowtan’s, the Goodwin’s, the hanson’s, the Joncas’, the Lockey’s, the Pederson’s, the Shepards, the Smeltzer’s and many more.
The Pro Category was the most stacked it has ever been, with a top field of competitors, current and former Olympians, National Team members and coaches all battling it out for the top cash prize. Just by looking at the top 3, you can see how strong the Pro Category was.
Female Pro
| 1st |
Maelle Ricker | 01:18.45 |
2010 Gold medalist Snowboard cross |
| 2nd |
Marni Yamada | 01:23.83 | Winter X-Games competitor for 10 years |
| 3rd | Carle Brenneman | 01:24.83 | National Team Member |
Male Pro
| 1st |
Rob Fagan |
01:15.58 |
National Team Member, Olympian |
| 2nd | Tom Velisek |
01:16.89 | Former National Team Member, Olympian |
| 3rd |
Carl Cowtan | 01:17.73 | Former Provincial Team Member, World Cup Racer |
Not everyone can make the podium, riders such as Kevin Hill (2011 X-games Silver medalist) Mark Fawcett (Former Olympian, National Team Alpine Coach) and Derek Wintermans (previous NEBS Winner) were knocking on the door in 4th 5th and 6th places e respectively.

The Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom is not solely about the pro category, it’s an event for everyone, regardless of age, or ability level. Three years ago we expanded to include an adaptive category. This year we hosted a Snow Skate category, seeing 7 competitors, Male and Female. Sebastien Brunet (Local Groomer) spearheaded the movement by riding his skate in the event last year. Unfortunately he was unable to post a full run, as he was nursing an ankle injury. Seabass being hurt opened the door for Jesse Blackstaffe (Terrain Park Groomer) to post an incredibly fast time of 1:44.30. With that time Jesse beat out a lot of the snowboard field, and he did it on a snowskate! Jesse was also the proud recipient of the commemorative Neil Edgeworth custom guitar made by Art Abrahams. Art is the owner of Artavox custom guitars. Art creates a beautiful hand built guitar, which is awarded each year to a member of the snowboarding community who represents the true spirit of the sport.
The Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom is not about getting first place in your category, even though placing first in your category gets you a coveted scarf made by Mrs. Edgeworth herself. It’s about having a great time racing with your friends and family, celebrating the spirit of snowboarding. 1997 was the inaugural year of the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom. Neil was tragically killed in an avalanche in Chamonix France in 1997 while on a photo shoot. Neil was a second generation Big White local; he is fondly remembered by everyone that knew him. He was great friends with Sean Johnson, founder of Stepchild Snowboards, on of the biggest supporters of this event. I personally did not know Neil, but being involved with this event for the past eight years and getting to know the people that did know him and listening to their stories and hearing their kind words, I feel I know him in some small way. Neil’s spirit lives on through this event, and all of us that ride in it every year.
I know there are some great stories out there from this past weekend; we’d love to hear yours. Check out our NEBS Facebook page be sure to “like” the page, and share your favorite Neil Edgeworth Stories.
Also check out the Photo page on Facebook here.
I want to thank everyone who participated, the sponsors for all the great prizes, Big White Ski resort for hosting such a great event, the Terrain Park and Outdoor Events staff for all their hard work on the course, Cathy and Erin for all their hard work, from registration, timing, tabulation and results. Of course a huge thanks to Flynn Seddon, for all he has done for the sport of Snowboarding since its inception.
See you all next year!
Chris “Fastest Manitoban” Smylski

NORTH AMERICAN SKI CROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
Ski Cross athletes from all over the world converged on Big White this weekend to battle it out at this North American series event. TELUS Park has amped up its snowcross course for this high level event.
Today Big White Ski Resort was host to the second day of competition of the Sport Chek Ski Cross Coupe Nor-am. Travis Firth, Ski Cross Competitions Coordinator, was pleased with how the event went:
“Another great event at Big White. A very successful day, an amazing effort and work put in by the Big White TELUS Terrain Park & Outdoor Events Staff. They produced a safe course with tough conditions with a large amount of snow overnight. We had some very exciting racing and an excellent display of sportsmanship. On behalf of Alpine Canada we would like to thank Big White Ski Resort, Sportchek and our volunteers for their support in putting on a great event”.
Kelsey Serwa, the current world champion, who is home at Big White resort recovering from ACL surgery helped design the course and was up at the start line all day today encouraging the athletes giving them tips and telling them about her world cup experiences. The young athletes were all excited to have the company of a world champion.

BILLABONG FLAUNT IT BIG WHITE, BRITISH COLUMBIA
For Immediate Release:
February 20th, 2012
Billabong Flaunt It, presented by Sony Ericsson arrived at Big White, BC for the third stop of the tour on Saturday, February 18th. The long awaited snow finally hit Thursday night and did not let up all weekend, making for some great powder turns but unfavorable contest conditions. While most riders were roaming the mountain getting lost in the fog, 18 competitors gave up a powder day and made their way out
to flaunt their skills.
The Rail Jam was held in the morning in hopes that the fog would roll out in the afternoon in time for the Slopestyle. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and as a result a second rail jam was held in the afternoon. The afternoon Rail Jam consisted of a log bonk, up‐flat‐down rail, a picnic table and a quarter pipe. The setup allowed the girls to get creative and was judged on overall impression. Defending champion Stephanie Haines made her mark on the judges and won both Rail Jams and the Dakine Best Trick, taking home a total of $1050 dollars, tons of prizing and secured herself a trip to the finals at Sierra‐At‐Tahoe for a second time.
Alaura Ewen and Zuzy Rocka stood out among the riders and each podium-ed twice in both morning and afternoon Rail Jams. Another outstanding rider, 13‐year‐old Kira Lengkeek rocked solid hand-plants on the quarter-pipe and took home the Nixon Style Award as well as 5th place in the afternoon Rail Jam.

What an exciting weekend of Boardercross racing we just had in TELUS Park! The action was fast and furious as competitors from nine different nations battled it out on our custom built course. We were very fortunate to have a former world cup racer, Tom Velisek here to help us design and build our course for this event. Tom was super stoked to have the opportunity to help and ride the course as one of our forerunners. Tom has a long list of accomplishments in the world of Boardercross, even competing at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy.
On Saturday and Sunday we played host to two separate NOR AM races, giving riders double the opportunity to take home the gold, and earn even more FIS points. We saw quite a bit of snow fall from the sky this weekend, which makes for great freeriding, but it’s not what you like to see on race day! Thanks to our amazing and dedicated Terrain Park and Outdoor Events Crew, for shovelling their little hearts out to make both races happen.
