Champagne anyone?
Thursday, October 23rd, 2008
While Kelowna celebrates fall in style, many winter sports enthusiasts are already anticipating another playful season in the Okanagan’s fabled champagne powder snow.
Just 45 minutes and 55 minutes respectively from Kelowna, two of the provinces finest ski resorts Big White and Silver Star offer 2,500 acres of skiable terrain and an uphill capacity of over 28,000 skiers an hour. “You never stand in line mid week at either of our resorts” says senior vice president Michael Ballingall. “These mountains are so vast and there are so many high speed chairs it’s like a helicopter experience on a $70 ticket.”
Perhaps the biggest draw, however, is the region’s “champagne powder” a moniker long used to describe the Okanagan’s big dry flakes of snow. “It falls deep – 24 feet annually,” and with surprising regularity, says Ballingall. “We get the majority of our snow daily between 5 and 10 am. It lays on top of the corduroy we’ve groomed the day before.”
Despite a cool environment, visitors can expect a warm welcome. ”We have a lot of active retirees in the valley. They genuinely enjoy the social interaction with tourists,” he says. “It’s that Canadian hospitality that so many of our out-of-town guests are looking for. It’s part of what makes Kelowna unique.”
