Resort Developments

Rotating Slow Zones

Safety and education is always foremost at Big White Ski Resort and with that in mind a new program is being implemented with rotating “Family/Seniors Skiing and Snowboarding Zones” for the 2010/2011 winter season. Three runs will be selected each day and these runs will have signage, gated entry and the addition of extra slope watch and patrol to ensure that speed and slow skiing and riding are monitored. The theme of these selected runs will be slow with extreme caution. This will allow our more senior guests as well as families with small children to explore more than just the green runs on the mountain and be at a pace that is slower. Jeremy Hopkinson V.P. of Outdoor Operations said “We have a lot of runs at Big White and plenty of space for everyone. Safety is a prime concern and these dedicated runs will allow those wanting to take it slow and easy to do so with the confidence that others on the run are doing the same." Big White’s Senior V.P. Michael Ballingall noted “Big White Ski Resort has always been a leader in safety and that contributed to being recently recognized as one of the Top 5 Family Resorts in the World. We have built a reputation for delivering quality and fun family holidays.”

Ice Tower

Big White has got a brand new activity this year. The ice tower will be the main attraction with a height of 60 feet! The structure is built with 4 telephone poles cross braced together then flooded with water which freezes into 3 feet of thick blue ice. There is a beginner side and three other sides for more advanced climbers or anyone who is looking for a challenge. This is an activity for all fitness levels and can satisfy anyone with an appetite for adventure! The ice tower will be located in the Happy Valley Adventure park, where you can test your skills on the ice or watch others as they attempt to reach the top.

Globe Cafe & Tapas Bar Expansion

The popular restanrant located in Trappers Crossing will be twice it's size next year along with a brand new menu.

Mountain Gear Specialist

A new retail shop will be opening in the Whitefoot with soft goods, custom t-shirts and other ski and snowboard essentials with an emphasis on value.

The Edge

Innovation, style and efficiency are the key to The Edge mountain homes. The beautiful homes boast massive floor plans, floor to ceiling windows, sustainable energy and spectacular views. With just 26 homes available, each is designed to embody the magical surroundings of Big White. Construction continues to finish the final phase.

Pisten Bully Edge

Big White Ski Resort has purchased a groomer that was used during the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. The Edge has 330 horsepower and is faster uphill under load. Even with all that power, it has lower fuel consumpition and reduced emissions. The machine can either be used as a free groomer or a Park cat.

Mountain Developments

There have been a number of projects taking place on the mountain over the summer, all of which will improve the guests experience. Ever mind full of the environment there are several water and sewer upgrades throughout the Village to help conserve water.

Summer Grooming Program

The very successful summer grooming program continues this year with seeding of bare areas and a dedicated crew brush cutting and clearing runs and glades.

TELUS Park Chair

The lift maintenance crew will be replacing the bearings in the TELUS Park Chair, a big job requiring a crane. They will also be doing a full maintenance schedule to make sure all the lifts are safe and ready to go for 2010/2011.

TELUS Terrain Park

TELUS Park has acquired 4 new features that will help develop our progression system even further. The progression system is based around Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large park features. The features are marked with signs at the entrance of the feature according to its size. This concept allows the skier or snowboarder to understand the size and shape of features found in terrain parks. The progression system allows the user to make choices on which features to use depending on their individual ability. The Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large features are designed in progression so a person can essentially start small and work their way up at their own pace. Two 10 and two 16 foot boxes will be introduced to the park to allow you more options to develop your skills and progress at your own speed.

Kelowna Internal Airport Runway Extension

The Kelowna runway extension is now complete and has increased the runway length from 7,300 feet to 9,000 feet. International flights no longer have to connect through Calgary or Vancouver to reach Kelowna. This places Kelowna as the third international gateway in BC.
