US Travellers Information

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative was announced by the U.S. government on April 5, 2005. The statute will require all travellers from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Panama to carry a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter the US, including returning Americans.

These are the pertinent dates:

  • Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.
  • As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.
  • New rules as of February 22, 2007 allow U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 16 through 18 traveling with school, religious, cultural or athletic groups and under adult supervision to travel with only their birth certificates. Click here for more details.
Please note that the new US Custom passport requirements applies solely to air traffic until January 1, 2008. Currently US Citizens traveling into Canada only require one piece of proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate or expired passport. Supporting ID such as a drivers license or other photo identification may also be asked for and will definitely help with the clearing process. For more information or to contact the port of entry closest to you, please visit: US Customs and Border Protection Departments website.
