Little Leaps at Big White...
It’s my job to make learning to snowboard more than just memories of a bruised bum. After all, Big White Ski Resort is all about having fun…for both kids and their families.
Big White is my home. I grew up coming to this mountain and I know I’ll never get enough of it. At the heart of the Okanagan Valley in BC’s southern interior, the resort is blessed with sunny weather and an average of 24.5 feet of legendary champagne powder annually.
My favourite day of teaching? I like it when the boy racers get shown up by the girls!
I remember Laura, a 12-year old student from last season. Her sheer determination to snowboard was obvious from day one. Although there were a few falls and bruises at first, we soon moved on to Millie’s Mile, a green run close to some glades where the visibility is best – it’s where I first learnt to glide and carve - before hitting her first ever blue run. Navigating the moguls and steeper pitch with ease, on reaching the bottom she turned to me and cheered: “Wow! I didn’t fall!” I was so incredibly proud of her as she improved rapidly, paying close attention to her form and really controlling her board.
It may be my home but why come to Big White? We’ve Canada’s largest totally ski-in/ski-out resort village, an award winning Kids Centre with childcare, ski school programmes, carnival nights, skating parties and more. The Daily Mail even recently rated our ski school one of the top five in the world!
Out of the blue, late last season, I received a letter from Laura, saying, “You are the greatest, awesomest, bestest ever! Thank you for helping me learn to snowboard. I’ll never forget you.” I still have the letter. I keep it as a reminder of that small moment in time. Better than a bruised bum any day!
