Two local 12 year old ski racers fought their way to top 10 performances in GS at the 20th Anniversary Whistler Cup over the Easter Weekend. Lukinuk was very consistent all weekend long skiing steady and completing each race effectively which seemed to be the recipe for success. She finished with an 11th in Slalom and 12th in Kombi, making her the only Okanagan K1 racer to finish in the top 15 for all three races. "This is the best ski event I have ever attended, to be able to compete against some of the best skiers in the world and see where you rank at this age is pretty amazing" claims Lukinuk. Other Big White recognitions go to Tyler Clark and Marcus Athans who placed 14th and 15th respectively in K1 Slalom, while Ella Alfonso in the K2 division took an a very notable 12th place in ladies Slalom. To help celebrate the 20th anniversary edition of the Whistler Cup, organizers welcomed back former racers such as current Canadian Alpine Ski Team members Robbie Dixon and Michael Janyk, of Whistler, Manuel Osborne-Paradis, of Vancouver, B.C., and Erin Mielzynski, of Guelph, Ont. In addition Tina Maze from Slovenia who raced in the Whistler Cup in 1996 and 1998 also presented awards."It's great to have so many countries racing here and it's a great opportunity for Europeans to come and compete against Canada and other countries," said Maze, who has 38 World Cup podiums and is the reigning world champion in giant slalom. "The organization has been really nice and the volunteers did a great job. It was fun to ski again in Whistler and I look forward to coming back soon." Look Who Was At Big White!
The Easter Bunny! What a fun surprise! We were at the Big White Carnival in the Village Centre Mall that happens every Saturday night during the season and while it was no surprise to run into Boomer and Loose Moose – Big White’s two mascots, what came as a big surprise was to turn around and see the Easter Bunny! There are all sorts of Easter Activities still remaining today.First, there’s a church service in the Village Plaza at 8:30am and then the Easter Bunny will return and you’ll find him skiing from 12 noon to 2pm and he’ll have some chocolate treats to give away. There’s also a scavenger hunt going on today and you can stop by the Activities Desk in the Village Centre Mall to pick up clues! While you’re at the Activities Desk, make sure to take a guess at how many candies are in that BIG jar on the desk! If your guess is the closest you win the whole jar!And I don’t know about you, but we used to always celebrate Easter with Hot Cross Buns, so if you’re hoping to find some on the mountain, you’re in luck! Drop by the Big White Bakery in the lower level of the Village Centre Mall to get yours!~Happy Easter Everybunny!

Powder No April Fool’s Joke!

Okay, admit it, how many of you looked at yesterday’s report and saw there was 16 cm of fresh champagne powder, then looked at the date and thought, yeah, right, April Fool’s to you too!Well, it was no April Fool’s joke and the only April Fools were the one’s who missed out on such an amazing day up on the hill. There was fresh powder tracks still to be found at the end of the day by those smart enough to ski across the fall line and the sun even came out to celebrate in the afternoon for the last few runs!Does it get much better than that? I don’t think so.Now that April Fool’s Day is over, sadly, it means the countdown to the end of the season is here. Two weeks from now is too late as the season ends April 15th.Line ups are non-existent, the sun is shining this morning and there’s still fresh powder to be found if you know where to look. And that’s no April Fool’s Joke!
Earth Hour - March 31st
0 Comments

What are you planning on doing for Earth Hour this year? At Big White, we’re hoping people will participate and we’re encouraging everyone to switch off the lights from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. Whether your turning off the lights so you can get to bed early to wake up for fresh tracks in the morning or just unplugging so you can sit and enjoy candle light with your loved ones, the goal is to get as many people as possible to participate in this annual event.Lots of skeptics ask, what good does turning the power off for one hour do? Actually, it does a lot! Not only is there a lot of energy saved when everyone participates, but it makes you a little more aware of the strain we put on the system during the rest of the year. How many lights do you really need to have on in your condo or cabin? Do you really need a TV when you’re up on the hill or is it nicer to just sit and talk about the day you’ve had skiing? To celebrate the day, the Globe Café & Tapas Bar will be hosting a special dinner by candlelight during Earth Hour and will be serving half price coffee to anyone who brings their own cup.Earth Hour first started in Australia in 2007 and is now recognized around the world. So, dig out your camping lantern, light some candles or drop by the Globe and help celebrate Earth Hour at Big White.

Big White is getting ready to host the 15th annual Neil Edgeworth Banked Slalom this weekend. This event is in memory of Neil Edgeworth, an influential Canadian snowboarder who passed away in 1997 in an avalanche in Chamonix, France while filming a photo shoot with friends. The first banked slalom was in 1987 and was reintroduced in 1997 with an average of 245 people per year.
Powder Day Secret
0 Comments
OK, so I’m going to let you in on a little secret but you have to promise not to tell anyone else. You know those big powder dumps we’ve been having lately? Well, sticking to the main runs, admittedly, the fresh un-tracked stuff down the middle only lasts for a few runs before everyone has already skied through it and while you can still find un-tracked fresh powder on the far edges, where there are a lot of other Powder-Hounds out there with you, even that can diminish. There is usually plenty to be found in the trees for those who comfortable heading to the inbound glades, but not everyone likes skiing in the trees. So the question is, where you can go to still find powder?
