SLOPESTYLE: Now an Official Olympic Sport
On July 5th 2011, the sport of Slopestyle became an official Olympic sport and will be included in the 2014 Olympic Winter games in Sochi, Russia.
Ski and snowboard terrain park enthusiasts can now take their tricks to a new level with the potential to compete in future Olympics.
Slopestyle is a combination of jumps, rails and other features, and points are added up based on amplitude and originality. Big White’s TELUS Terrain Parks offer terrain for all abilities with its small, medium, large and extra-large park lanes so all skiers and riders can start working their way to an Olympic ski and snowboard slopestyle dream.
Cathy Astofooroff, the Executive Director of the BC Snowboard Association commented, “The first FIS sanctioned Slopestyle in Canada was held at Big White’s TELUS Park by the BC Snowboard Association on January 9th, 2010. Big White has been a long-time supporter of Slopestyle, hosting BC Snowboard Provincial Series events in TELUS Park since 2005. With the help of Big White, BC Snowboard provides a fun competition atmosphere to athletes of all ages, as well as a competition stream for the more serious athlete looking to gain valuable FIS points. BC Snowboard Slopestyle events are dual sanctioned, meaning athletes can earn FIS points as well as TTR points.”
Flynn Seddon, Director of Terrain Parks and Events at Big White added, “It’s great that all kids can now connect riding in the park and doing the thing they love with an Olympic sport. Slopestyle competitions have been under way for years but now these kids can set their sights on the ultimate goal, and for some, and that’s representing their country at the Olympics.”
Amazing opportunities for new generation terrain park skiers and Snowboarders are happening this winter at Big White’s TELUS Terrain Park. Come and session the park and stop in and take part in one of our Weekend Rail jams or one of BC Snowboards provincial slopestyle competitions.
The 2012 BC Snowboard Provincial Series kicks off in TELUS Park with the first Slopestyle doubleheader event on January 7th & 8th, 2012.
